It’s Over: Last Standing Halo 2 Player Bows Out
By Jared Newman
A couple weeks ago we brought word of someĀ Halo 2 players who wouldn’t quit when Microsoft cut off Xbox Live support for first-generation games. While new players were barred from entering the game, this group learned that they could keep fragging as long as their consoles were turned on and signed into Xbox Live. Of course, it had to end some time, and that day was Monday, when Apache N4SIR was booted offline.
Apache’s final fragging buddy was Agent Windex, who lost his connection to Xbox Live earlier that day. This left Apache in an awkward position, all alone in a network meant for playing together. The ending was unceremonious as Apache got kicked off as well.
If I were a conspiracy theorist, I’d say Microsoft slowly and quietly dismantled the Halo 2 crew one by one, but the company appeared to play along with the final Halo 2 players, congratulating them and trying to lure them away with Halo: Reach beta codes. Judging from Apache’s profile, the offer was meaningless as he already owns Halo 3: ODST, giving him access to the beta, and he’s playing it now. That means the last Halo 2 player owned an Xbox 360 but choose to play Halo 2 anyway. That’s dedication. [via Kotaku]
