Modern Warfare 2 Cheater Roundup: 2,500 Banned
By Benjamin Opal
Unless you’re one of them, please join me in the catharsis of knowing that 2,500 cheaters have been banned from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for the PC. “Top men are on it,” developer Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling wrote on Twitter. “In fact, the Steam ban hammer is coming down on about 2,500 confirmed … cheaters on PC today.” It’s not clear whether this is the hammer’s first swing, or whether cheater bans have been ongoing since Modern Warfare 2 debuted on November 10. Cheat prevention was one reason Modern Warfare 2 uses Valve’s matchmaking service for PC multiplayer instead of dedicated servers, a move that caused an uproar.
According to Destructoid, post-launch Modern Warfare 2 hacks included unlimited ammo and XP boosts, among others. A day after the game launched, a video of several PC cheat hacks emerged, reportedly being sold by a Call of Duty hacking site. Tricks were the usual mix of X-ray vision, auto-aim and one-shot kills, which actually look pretty cool in video, but there’s nothing more revolting in online multiplayer than realizing you’re being cheated on. So kudos to Infinity Ward and Valve Anti-Cheat for swinging that banhammer. My only hope is that they can come up with a more proactive way to prevent cheating in the first place. [via Destructoid]
