Xbox Live Updates on Nov. 17, But Here Comes PS3 Facebook
By Jared Newman
Microsoft has finally revealed when it will bring Facebook, Zune, Twitter and Last.fm to Xbox Live. The new features will come in an update on November 17, with all except Zune requiring an Xbox Live Gold subscription. Not to be outdone, Sony is sort of confirming that it will bring Facebook to the Playstation 3, with a source telling Eurogamer that yesterday’s rumor is correct, and PR saying they’ll have more info “very soon.” It blows my mind that Sony isn’t just dismissing the story as “rumor and speculation.” Anyway, we’ve broken down the new Xbox Live features for you after the jump.
Facebook – You can view photos, look at status updates and cross-check your list of friends against your Xbox Live friends list. Status updates can include whatever you happen to be doing on the Xbox 360, such as watching a movie or playing a game.
Zune – Essentially a rebranding of Xbox Live’s video marketplace, the Zune store now gives you 1080p streaming videos and 5.1 surround sound. Also, the avatars of up to seven online friends can sit in on viewings. It’s like Mystery Science Theater 3000, but not as funny.
Twitter – It’s pretty much straight-up Twitter, though you can also see who’s tweeting about the games you like.
Last.fm – Unfortunately, you can’t listen to Last.fm while playing games, but otherwise this is just like the existing Internet radio service. There are also “Gamer Stations” with game-related music.
