Walkthrough Wednesday: StarCraft II Strategy, Cheats and Tips

Okay, it’s Thursday now, but we couldn’t let the week go by without links to the best StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty strategy guides, tips and cheats around the web. A lot of sites are still scrambling to get their StarCraft II guides in order, but here’s what I’ve found so far:

If you’re a StarCraft novice, check out the hints from either 1UP or PCWorld, both of which are intended for beginners. Among the useful advice: Don’t stop building workers, spend money quickly, use towers sparingly and start upgrading your base early, if possible. Once you’re ready to go in-depth, check out 1UP’s full strategy guide, which is a work in progress but already has lots of specific advice for dealing with Zerg, Protoss and Terran attacks.

Seekers of hard data might want to look at StarCraftIIStrategy, which has pages upon pages of building and unit stats. A basic guide at the GameFAQs message boards might also help you figure out what does what, and it’s all displayed on one searchable page.

As for StarCraft II cheats, there are three I know of so far: “moredotsmoredotsmoredots” reduces the resource cost of units to zero, “terribleterribledamage” activates God mode, and “whysoserious” gives you 5,000 credits. You can’t get achievements with these cheats, and they don’t work in multiplayer — cheating for those purposes would be pretty dishonorable, anyway.

Finally, one fun StarCraft II easter egg: Head to the bar on Jim Raynor’s ship and click the arcade machine to play “Lost Vikings,” a top-down shooter.
