Tecmo Super Bowl Accurately Picks the Saints

By

The Indianapolis Colts may have been the Super Bowl favorite in Las Vegas, but perhaps the bookies should’ve turned to the infinite wisdom of NES classic Tecmo Super Bowl, which accurately predicted a win from the New Orleans Saints. Knobbe.org, a home for Tecmo Super Bowl fans the world over, ran a simulation of the game and predicted a final score of 34 to 31 in overtime. It’s not quite the same as the Saints’ decisive 31-17 victory, but maybe if Payton Manning hadn’t thrown a pick to Tracy Porter with three minutes left, and the Colts had managed to score a touchdown, get the onside kick and score again, Tecmo’s outcome could’ve had a chance. In any case, the end result is the same: Extended Mardi Gras.

Knobbe the Tecmo Super Coach hack with updated rosters and even a few new plays to predict Sunday’s outcome. For good measure, they also simulated the game 100 times. The Saints won 52 of them, and 43 games were decided by four points or less. The highlight? A 55-yard bomb into the end zone by Drew Brees, hitting Marquis Colston in the gut. Check out the 10-minute long simulation on YouTube, or the abbreviated version above, and keep Tecmo Super Bowl in mind next time you’re placing a bet. [Knobbe.org via SB Nation]

I ran a few Tecmo Super Bowl projection simulations myself, with the original game and default rosters/playbooks.

My com-vs.-com game accurately picked the Saints, including correctly predicting their 31 points.
