The best thing about Super Mario Bros. Crossover is not that it’s a mashup of the classic Nintendo game with other iconic NES characters, but that developer Jay Pavlina absolutely crushed it. Anyone could throw a few sprites into an emulator, but this free Flash game, hosted on Newgrounds, captures the feel of Link, Samus, Bill Rizer (Contra), Simon Belmont and Mega Man and fuses them with one of the most popular video games of all time. When players collect mushrooms and fire flowers, their characters upgrade just as they do in their native games. And there are plenty of little touches, like sound effects and music that match the game of your character. Play this now.

Pavlina said he spent over a year developing Super Mario Bros. Crossover, which is amazingly his first. He told GameExplain that he entered crunch mode in October 2009 and “pretty much did nothing but work on the game all day, every day, including weekends” until the game was finished in April 2010. Even though there are few complaints about the game as it is now, Pavlina said it’s “sort of like a demo version. If everyone knew what I was really planning, I think they’d freak out even more.” Here’s hoping he doesn’t get sued. [Newgrounds via TechnaBob]
