Space Invaders Movie Can’t Be Worse Than Asteroids Movie
By Jared Newman
As proof that Hollywood has completely run out of ideas, Warner Bros. is reportedly negotiation with Taito to get the movie rights for Space Invaders. You can’t make this stuff up, folks. According to the Los Angeles Times, Warner has already picked out its producers to bring the 1979 arcade classic to the silver screen. Mark Gordon (“Saving Private Ryan,” “The Day After Tomorrow”), Jason Blum (“Paranormal Activity”) and Guymon Casady (he was, um, the executive producer of “Terry Tate: Office Linebacker,” among other things) will reportedly head the project.
Sound bizarre? It’s not, considering that Fox is setting up a film adaptation of Missile Command and Universal is turning Asteroids into a movie. At the very least, Space Invaders holds the most promise, as it at least has some semblance of a plot: The aliens are invading, you shoot them. It makes for better movie fodder than being alone in a field of space rocks or fending off missiles that descent from sky for absolutely no reason. Not that I endorse any of this. Not that when these movies arrive in theaters, the masses won’t line up to see them no matter how devoid of soul they are. [via the LA Times]
