Sony PS3 Ad Offends Nigeria, Gets Altered
By Jared NewmanNigeria has been the butt of every e-mail phishing scam joke ever since we, well, started getting solicitations from people who claimed to be Nigerian royalty. But once Sony got in on the comedy, the country showed its hurt feelings. The Playstation 3 ads depict a “director of rumor confirmation,” fending off claims that the PS3′s price was reduced to $299, which it was. “You can’t believe everything you read on the Internet,” the actor says. “Otherwise, I’d be a Nigerian millionaire by now.” Nigeria’s federal government called this an “unwarranted attack on the reputation and image of the country,” and Sony backed off. In addition to apologizing, Sony altered the ad to read, “You can’t believe everything you read on the Internet. That’s how World War I got started.” Bizarre, cute, but not quite as funny. Move along. [via Kotaku]
