Wheee! SkiFree Lands on the iPhone, For FreeBy Benjamin Opal
SkiFree has just arrived on the iPhone, and it’s sure to suck away all your spare time if you have any sense of nostalgia. The original game was created in the early 1990s by Microsoft programmer Chris Pirih, and released as part of the Microsoft Entertainment Pack for Windows 3.1. You play an unnamed skiier who zips down the mountain while avoiding trees, rocks and other obstacles. There are also jumps you can hit, allowing you to perform mid-air flips for extra points. So simple, and yet surprisingly easy to get lost in.
Of course, SkiFree aficionados will note that the iPhone version of the game is missing a few things, such as slalom mode and other easter eggs. The snow monster, which would eventually chase down and devour your skiier if you kept racing past the finish line, is notably absent. However, seller Jared McGann says all those missing pieces are on tap for future versions of the game. Don’t have an iPhone? You can still download the original game from SkiFree’s official Web site.
