Rumor Ridiculous: Microsoft to Acquire EA

The difference between me and a stock trader: When I start an unsubstantiated rumor (which I don’t), the stock market doesn’t so much as wiggle a toe. But here’s Frederic Ruffy, options strategist for WhatsTrading.com in New York: “There’s talk that Microsoft might be interested in acquiring Electronic Arts. It’s unsubstantiated chatter, but it’s out there.” Meanwhile, an unnamed London-based trader has been saying the same thing, also with no evidence to back it up. The result? EA shares are up 0.9 percent. I looked around for any kind of evidence from before, showing that this “chatter” isn’t coming from left field, and all I see is speculation from Forbes, dating to March, that Microsoft and five other companies could be viable candidates for a takeover. In May, it was said that Apple might take over EA, which obviously didn’t pan out. So let’s just file this one under “believe it when you see it.” [via Reuters]
