Review Roundup: Nintendo 3DS
By Joseph Oliveto
The Nintendo 3DS has had fans of portable gaming excited for some time now. While it’s been out in Japan since February, European and North American customers have had to wait another month to get an opportunity to try out the new system. With tomorrow, March 25 marking the European release date, we thought we’d compile a few of the best reviews to let you know whether or not the system lives up to expectations.
- The Guardian has a fairly comprehensive video review. They admit that while the 3D features aren’t visible on video, they are pretty impressive in practice. They also seem to clearly enjoy the built-in 3D camera.
- IGN gave the 3DS a fairly positive review, explaining that while the price and battery life aren’t ideal, the system offers enough new features to justify its existence.
- Engadget were impressed with the 3DS, but weren’t ready to urge readers to buy it just yet, as a new version will likely result in an eventual price drop. They feel it’s best for hardcore gamers who can’t go without the latest tech.
- The most enthusiastic review came from Computer and Video Games. They seem to feel that this technology is more than just “neat”; to them, it’s practically revolutionary.
Well, there you have it. Different sources are saying different things, but it all comes down to one conclusion: the Ninetendo 3DS is not a disappointment. It probably isn’t worth the pricetag for casual gamers, but for those of us who’ve been looking forward to its release since it was announced, it’s everything we could have wanted.
