Fans of Prey, the sci-fi shooter featuring aliens, American Indians, and a classic hard rock sountrack, will be happy to learn that IGN is reporting that a sequel may be headed our way in 2012. Bethesda Softworks, the publisher behind the immensely enjoyable Fallout 3, announced that they will be developing the game for the XBox 360, Playstation 3, and PC.

It may be easy for some fans to be a little cynical about this news–a previous attempt to get a sequel off the ground in 2008 resulted in failure–but this sounds pretty official. Bethesda’s recent success should make it easy for them to put the project together.

Fortunately, new owernship of the franchise doesn’t mean that the gameplay itself will change; Human Head Studios, the company that brought us the original Prey, will be behind the sequel as well.

The question over whether gamers will still be interested on this franchise remains unanswered, however. With a relatively long hiatus between this installment and the original, it’s fair to argue that gamers will have more or less forgotten about Prey. This will have to be a very impressive title if it is going to attract enough attention to itself, and we have to remember that while Prey was an fun game, it was rarely hailed as revolutionary or game-changing.

Then again, a lot of fans had forgotten about the Fallout series up until recently, so maybe Bethesda knows how to handle these types of situations. Either way, we’ll have to wait and see how it all turns out, but at the very least we expect this game to be fun enough to justify its existence.
