Yes, PSN’s Having Problems; Sony “Looking Into It”
By Jared Newman
You’re not the only one having problems with the Playstation Network, as Sony confirmed that PSN is down for many users. “We’re aware that many of you are having problems connecting to PSN, and yes, we’re looking into it. Stay tuned for updates,” says the official Twitter feed for Sony Playstation. Joystiq reports that those affected are seeing an 8001050F error code, which results in corrupted trophy information, in turn barring players from certain games including Heavy Rain. GameInformer reports that maintenance to the Playstation Network could be to blame, but that’s only according to some forum posters who say they’ve spoken with Sony tech support. The only thing that’s confirmed right now is that PSN is having problems, and Sony’s trying to fix it. I’ll post an update when new information comes in.
Update: Sony says it’s “narrowing down the issue,” and that PS3 Slim models (both 120 GB and 250 GB) are working normally, according to user feedback. We’ll keep you posted, or keep an eye on Sony’s Twitter feed.
Update 2: Interesting theory floated by one of our commenters, that this is a leap year issue, even though 2010 is not a leap year. There seems to be some discussion of issues with the PS3′s internal calendar on Joystiq and NeoGAF, noting that calendars on PS3 Fats are reverting to 12/31/99. Stay tuned.
Update 3: Develop reports that Playstation 3 developers and game studios are also suffering. Still no updates from Sony. Full story here.
Update 4: Sony confirms many problems users are reporting, and says owners of non-slim PS3 models should avoid playing until the problems are resolved, hopefully within 24 hours. For details, please see the latest coverage.
Update: Sony confirmed that this was a leap year problem, and service is restored now that it’s March 1. I’m not going to post a proper update unless more information is provided.

The PSN is seemingly hijacked by an unknow group of Russian pirates/hackers as far as I can tell they are demanding that Sony make all DLC free.
negotiations are ongoing, will try to keep people posted

Mark – if this is true, and you're from Sony, why not leave your last name? It would make this claim a lot easier to confirm.
Monday, March 1, 2010 3:27AM

NETFLIX FIX: I am having the same problem and Netflix was broken. The problem causes your date to change to 1999 and Netflix apparently doesn't like that. I just changed it to 2010 and now my Netflix is working again! Can still not log into PSN though.
Monday, March 1, 2010 3:40AM

Monday, March 1, 2010 4:30AM
Well I'm just glad to know that it has nothing to do with my network or console, as troubleshooting network problems is always a hassle. I'd be surprised if it weren't up by tomorrow.

Monday, March 1, 2010 5:43AM
Setting the date/time manually seems to help with using the Netflix disc, which was getting the error, but I still get the 'signed out of PSN' message…
Monday, March 1, 2010 5:50AM
I am having the same problem when I play Heavy Rain. I have had my internet disabled so that is not the reason why this is happening. Like somone said it is probably an issue with the february date. my date was changed also (so cant be a hack since my internet is off). Some bug on the non slim ps3 . My other games work though. I tried bio shock and its fine.

Monday, March 1, 2010 5:15PM
hey bigrussx5. not that comment "update 2" comes from a commenter.. and so that update states that the ps3 slims have a different calender config? exactly.. 50 bucks says sony purposely screws up the playstation network to get everyone pissed… then will eventually turn around and say "hey, we can fix this, but you will have to pay "50" a year"…. and noone will bitch because then they can play their ps3~ just my opinion..
cheers
Monday, March 1, 2010 5:35PM

Monday, March 1, 2010 6:31PM
No, you can't! The trophy information is synced with your user on the hard drive
Monday, March 1, 2010 9:24PM
OMG i am so tried of all the spam messages and stupid people like you going around trying to scare ppl in believeing that PSN is going to start charging. IF YOU JUST TOOK THE TIME TO READ UP ON IT URSELF YOU WOULD KNOW THE TRUTH.but since it looks like you dont know how i'll forward it:
Along with 3D gaming, this is one of the ways Sony’s hoping to turn a profit in the Playstation division (and for the company as a whole) next year. The presentation notes that PSN has 33 million subscribers, with 5.4 million people signing in daily and 1.4 million people visiting the Playstation Store every day. Digital sales through the Playstation store have tripled over the last year, and users collectively download 25 petabytes of data every month. I’d expect Sony’s premium PSN to capitalize on the interest in video, perhaps with some sort of subscription pass or access to online video channels, but the company is wisely avoiding a backlash by not pulling the plug on multiplayer.

Next year, Sony will offer a paid, premium version of its online services for the Playstation 3 and PSP. The company revealed its plans in a strategy presentation (PDF) but didn’t elaborate on what services a premium PSN would offer. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai confirmed the plans, but in a statement to CVG, suggested that none of the things you already get for free will go behind a paywall. “Especially in the on-line area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services,” he said.
