Sony plans to support 3D gaming on the Playstation 3 by the end of 2010, according to a presentation on the company’s plans for profitability. 3D support coincides with Sony’s desire to push 3D across several of its electronics platforms, starting with Blu-ray players and televisions, then moving on to the Playstation 3. In time, the company even wants live broadcasters to introduce 3D in their television programming. It seems that Sony would be able to build 3D capabilities into existing Playstation 3 consoles, though that point is not entirely clear. In any case, you’ll of course need a 3D television and glasses.

The report from Kotaku stacks up with a hands-on account from CNet earlier this year. At IFA, CNet was able to witness 3D gameplay in action. The amazing thing is that the technology worked with existing games, because a prototype Sony Bravia 3D TV was handling all the processing. Sony eventually wants to build the 3D technology directly into the Playstation 3, so any 3D television would be compatible. The plan is to introduce 3D with Bravia televisions in 2010, with support for other TVs coming in the next two to three years. Whether this equates to profitability depends on whether people buy into the 3D craze that hardware makers are so desperately trying to push.
