Netflix Gets the Super Mario Bros. Super Show
By Jared Newman
If The Legend of Zelda cartoon on Hulu didn’t satisfy your urge for the cheesiest of gaming nostalgia, the emulation of a Nintendo-addled childhood is now complete with The Super Mario Bros. Super Show on Netflix. Subcribers can now stream volume one of the Super Show’s four-disc set. Starring the late “Captain” Lou Albano as Mario and Danny Wells as Luigi, the series consisted of live action with the actors, supposedly at their apartment in Brooklyn, leading into cartoons that take place in the Mushroom Kingdom.
“What’s more,” says the Netflix description, “each vintage episode contains live-action segments with such guest stars as Cyndi Lauper, Sgt. Slaughter, Danica McKellar, Joe Piscopo and Magic Johnson.” Can’t be bothered to check it out? At least watch the show’s introduction. A more jarring juxtaposition of fantasy against reality does not exist. I might rather find and consume a box of Nintendo cereal than sit through a DVD’s worth of these shows, but they can’t be much worse than the movie. [Netflix via Press the Buttons]
