Max Payne 3 Still On Its Way? These Screenshots Make Us Think So

Max Payne may have suffered the indignity of a horrendously embarassing cinematic adaptation that nearly crushed all the goodwill Marky Mark had cultivated since Boogie Nights, but plenty of video games have been subject to similar ordeals–the abomination that was the Super Mario Bros. movie didn’t kill the game franchise upon which it was based, and while the Max Payne series certainly isn’t as iconic as the Mario games, it has served up enough entertainment to recover from that minor tragedy.
However, fans of the franchise were disappointed when it was announced that the third entry in the series was put on hold. Thankfully, some screenshots, courtesy of IGN, indicate that the project is still in development.
The screenshots were posted on the official Twitter account of Rockstar games, so unless some hacker with a grudge against gamers and too much time on his hands is punking us all, they must be the real deal. Now, we’ll admit that the pics don’t show us too much, aside from the fact that the title character appears to have adopted a “Bruce Willis meets Hunter S. Thompson” look, but the fact that Max Payne 3 is still in the works is reason enough for celebration.
The first two games in this series offered up tremendously engaging gameplay mixed with a solid story that paid loving, tongue-in-cheek tribute to the great works of crime cinema. Here’s to hoping that the third installment is equally enjoyable.
