How Does Tony Hawk Feel About Tony Hawk: Ride? Pretty Good!
By Benjamin Opal
Poor Tony Hawk. Here’s what he said at E3 this year about Tony Hawk: Ride, which uses a skateboard-shaped, sensor-packed peripheral instead of a regular controller: “I really have wanted to do a video game with a skateboard controller for a long, long time and I just felt like the technology wasn’t there yet, and I’m really excited that [developer] Robomoto figured out how to … make a real skate game because really, the best way to experience skateboarding is, as it’s meant to be, on a board.” So now, Tony Hawk: Ride is here, and it’s been mostly panned. But Hawk, speaking to The Sudbury Star, said those naysaying critics haven’t given the game a fair shot.
“They were ready to discredit it before they even tried it, and if it didn’t play exactly how they imagined it … then they passed it off,” he said. Hawk challenged claims that the board isn’t responsive, and said critics approached the game with a negative attitude. “I know that (RIDE) is super fun, and I think there’s a misconception that I just stick my name on a game,” he said. “I brought this idea to Activision, and I saw it through, I’ve been playing it every step of the way and I am very proud of it.” If you purchased the game and disagree, you could always turn the board into a bong.
