I think people criticize the plot holes in Heavy Rain much more than other games because it's so dependent on the plot. It's a major focus and selling point of the game, so I think it's fair that it gets criticized more than other games for a bad plot. However, I also totally agree with your review. I really enjoyed Heavy Rain, despite it's plot issues and some (rather glaring) flaws. It's a big mess, but I found it a really likable mess. :)

As for what it means for gaming as a whole, tough to say. I think it's definitely a step in the right direction for narrative-driven games, and I hope they continue to refine this system and tell other stories (i.e. make other games) with it, and I hope other developers are inspired by it and apply their own ideas to it. This is how great game design evolves, I believe. It's not the future of gaming, but I think it is a future of gaming.

I almost agree with this review, but the realization that so many of your choices don't make a difference, and a great deal of those life-threatening situations cannot end with your character's death, takes a toll on the enjoyment of a game intended to be driven by choice. If you disagree, try and let Shelby drown in his car. Try and let Ethan be shot by the drug dealer. Try and make virtually anything different happen for the first half of the game, and see that nothing really changes. If it's about story, it needs a better story. If it's about decisions, then those decisions need to mean more.

"the life or death quicktime events won me over"

WOW. The worst part of Resident Evil 5 is someone's else's favourite gameplay...
Heavy Rain = Hit the button!!!
They managed to make a game slower and less coordinated than DDR.
Do you also still play TimeGal on Sega CD?

Thank you! This is the perfect response to criticisms of Heavy Rain's plot holes. The tagline really does say it all. I made the decision early on that I was going to do whatever it takes to save Ethan's son. Even so, I hesitated when I had to kill a man--something that has never happened in all of my years of first-person shooters. I not only hesitated but I felt remorse on drinking the poison--something that has never happened in my years of choosing between "good" or "evil" in an RPG or a Peter Molyneaux game. The plot holes are all there, and some of the characters are absurd in their motivations. But in the end it did not detract from the experience.
