Another week, another round of App Store updates for the iPhone and iPod Touch, but this week’s got one biggie: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. Continuing the iPhone’s push towards more elaborate (and, therefore, pricier) video games, GTA: Chinatown Wars will cost you $9.99, but that’s still a great deal compared to the Nintendo DS and PSP versions of the game, priced at $20 and $30, respectively. The game is a return to the roots of Grand Theft Auto as a top-down driving and shooting game, telling the story of triad member Huang Lee on a quest for revenge in Liberty City.

Pocket Gamer’s got a review up already, and though they decry Chinatown Wars’ “occasionally awkward controls, lack of combat targeting, an interface mired in menus,” they say the game leaves competing titles in the dust. Some of GTA: Chinatown Wars’ elegance on the Nintendo DS was lost in translation from two screens to one, and at one point the game reportedly tells you to press the “circle” button — instructions for the PSP version of the game that were apparently overlooked when porting to iPhone. Still, this being Grand Theft Auto, it’s hard to argue with the amount of playing time you’d get for that $10 purchase. [via Softpedia and Pocket Gamer]
