It’s no Duke Nukem Forever, but Gran Turismo 5 seems to be caught in nasty case of development hell. Do a little digging through Google, and you’ll find way, way too many stories about how the Playstation 3 exclusive racer has been delayed. Now, Sony’s doing it again, delaying Gran Turismo 5 indefinitely. Sony had previously targetedĀ a summer 2010 release date for , andĀ a March 2010 release date in Japan. Because the release date is now TBA, it’s not clear how far off the game is from those dates. Sony cited production-related matters according to Reuters.

Before that, in 2008, developer Polyphony Digital’s Kazunori Yamauchi was talking maybe 2009, maybe 2010. And before that, in 2007, Yamauchi said 2008 was the earliest we’d see the game. I guess Sony has wised up and realized that you can’t stamp a date on something that’s in the relentless pursuit of perfection. Sony also apologized for any inconvenience this delay has caused. Gran Turismo 5 reportedly cost $60 million to make according to Kotaku. The game will have over 1,000 automobiles and 20 racing locations. The series has long been regarded as the pinnacle of realistic racing simulators, though it’s recently faced some stiff competition from the Xbox-exclusive Forza Motorsport series.
