Madden 12 is currently in the works at EA, and the folks in charge have decided to make things a little interesting for gamers this time around by allowing them to decide which athlete’s face will grace the cover of this edition of the game, according to IGN. In recent years, fans have come to jokingly believe in something called “The Madden Curse,” in which players who appear on the game’s cover end up suffering injuries or fall into other unfortunate circumstances which negatively affect their performance on the field.

We’re crossing our fingers for Ben Roethlisberger being this year’s pick.

In cooperation with ESPN, EA will let gamers vote each day from a bracketed list of thirty-two players; each Monday, we’ll see who advanced to the next level, with the final winner being revealed on ESPN’s SportsNation on April 27. To submit your vote, visit the official website.

This franchise usually does fairly well, so they probably aren’t desperately employing this tactic to increase anticipation for the game, but it’s still a fairly smart move to get gamers involved while we wait for the game’s actual release. Odds are those behind the idea know full well the urban legend of the Madden curse will make a promotional stunt like this one especially fun for gamers.

Will you be participating? And who will you be voting for?
