With Nintendo not showing any interest in following up on Super Mario Bros. 2, your best bet might be FiNCK, a PC game that will be released on May 12, probably for free. FiNCK (Fire Nuclear Crocodile Killer) faithfully recreates SMB 2′s grab-and-throw style of platform gaming, and along with similar obstacles such as exploding bombs and leaping foes that you can jump on to reach higher ground. The game’s being developed by Nifflas, best known for the Knytt series, a relaxing, non-violent Metroid style game that I also highly recommend.

Nifflas says “FiNCK was developed quickly, contains no story, even its title makes no sense.” He further etxplains with the game’s YouTube trailer that he didn’t pay much attention to art, atmosphere or sound, which are usually the hallmarks of his work. “I basically needed to work on a non-serious project after Saira since that was so ambitious, just as a break,” he wrote. “… Don’t get me wrong though, FiNCK was incredibly fun to create and contains some of the best gameplay in a Nifflas game.” SMB 2 is like the black sheep of the Mario family, probably because it wasn’t originally a Mario game, so it’s good that someone finds the core idea worth mimicking.
