Final Fantasy 1 and 2 Coming to iPhone, iPod Touch
By Benjamin OpalSquare Enix revealed that Final Fantasy 1 and 2 will be sold for the iPhone and iPod Touch, becoming yet another publisher to realize you can resell all your old games on Apple’s portable devices and probably make a killing. Final Fantasy was originally released in the United States for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990. The second game remained solely in Japan after its 1988 release, until it was re-released on its own and with the first game for Playstation in 2002, and repackaged as part of Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls for Game Boy Advance in 2004.
From the screenshots Square Enix has shared, we can see that the game isn’t a simple emulation. Sprites are smoothed out, and there looks to be a touch screen interface for doing battle. When wandering the overworld, there appears to be a directional pad for moving around. Notably, the second game is the original Final Fantasy II, not Final Fantasy IV, which was sold as Final Fantasy II in the United States. Square Enix is keeping quiet on price and release date. But its only a matter of time before rabid fans begin pleading for an iPhone Chrono Trigger. [Facebook via KnowYourMobile]
