Far Cry 3 in the Making, Probably Not Set in Africa

You can’t get away with having just two games in a series these days, so it’s no surprise that Far Cry 3 is underway. Speaking to Official Playstation Magazine, Ubisoft scriptwriter Kevin Shortt described the development as “pretty exciting,” though he’s not currently working on the title. That’s all we really know. Last year, narrative designer Patrick Redding said a sequel could take place in Africa, or possibly Antarctica, though a source at Ubisoft told IncGamers that Africa’s probably out of the question. “”We’re still in very early development and we have no idea where it’s going to be set, but I’m pretty sure that it won’t be in Africa,” the source said.
Far Cry made a big splash in its 2004 PC debut for being an all-around solid first-person shooter, punctuated by superior artificial intelligence and a lush jungle setting for sneaking around. The second game, however, took a completely different direction, with different characters, an African setting and an open-ended mission structure. Critics took a liking to Far Cry 2, which released simultaneously for PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, though the game faltered on repetition and lengthy travel times around its vast world. I’d imagine that Ubisoft will follow the trajectory of the second game as the series gains momentum, but it seems that everything’s up in the air right now. [via IncGamers and CVG]
