I’m one of those people that’ll pay over and over again for Doom just to play it on the platform of my choosing, so the proposition of Doom Classic for the iPhone is awfully tempting, even at $6.99. There’s nothing in this package that hasn’t already been experienced: You get all three original episodes of the classic first-person shooter, plus a fourth episode, “Thy Flesh Consumed,” which was released with the game’s boxed retail version, but no Doom II, sadly.

Worried about controlling an FPS on the iPhone? Take comfort knowing that John Carmack, id Software’s co-founder and the programmer behind the original game, personally developed the controls. From the looks of it, Doom will play a lot like the iPhone version of Wolfenstein 3D, which is a good thing. The customizable controls, which allow you to place buttons anywhere on the screen, should go a long way towards making you comfortable by fragging demons. Other features include deathmatch and cooperative multiplayer via wireless Internet and the ability to listen to your own tunes instead of the cheesy MIDI rock soundtrack. It looks like Doom got a minor facelift, too, with once-pixelated textures rounded out for the modern era. The characters still look like paper cut-outs, but I like it that way.
