Neill Blomkamp, director of the surprisingly intense District 9, is open to the idea of taking the movie’s setting to other formats – including video games – though he admits that the prospect is worrisome as movie-based games rarely exhibit quality.

“The idea of “District 9″ as a video game stresses me out a little bit because games based on movies rarely work,” Blomkamp said.  ”And movies based on games don’t work — I don’t know what’s up with that.”

Even still, he admits that he plays “a lot of video games” and loves virtual environments.  He describes how the world of District 9 could work well in a virtual format.

“I think a virtual environment of the slums of Soweto is an appealing idea to me. The weapons are cool, too. I photographed the film in a way that isn’t that different than video-game perspective in some parts. So a game would be interesting to me,” he said.

Though the idea could work, Blomkamp explained that the decision to adapt the movie ultimately lays with movie producer Peter Jackson, and that there is “nothing happening with it” currently.

Anyone that’s seen the movie has probably already salivated about using that lightning explodey gun in a game.  Just imagine the gibs!
