demonssouls1 Demons Souls DLC? Somethings Brewing [Update: No]

Update: A few commenters have pointed out that this is likely a white world tendency event, much like the black world tendency event that took place on Halloween. That makes much more sense. Feel free to ignore the speculative difficulty rant below.

Sony seems to be planning something for fans of Demon’s Souls, myself included. “Heroes of Boletaria, take heart: rumor has it the Old One’s power will falter in the days following the winter solstice #demonssouls,” reads a Tweet from Sony’s Playstation Twitter account. Blend Games did a quick and dirty analysis of the cryptic message and speculates that the game will get an optional easier difficulty setting, due to fall after December 21 (when the winter solstice begins).

I hope that’s not the case. Though I’m still on the fence about hand-holding features such as New Super Mario Bros. Wii’s “Super Guide,” an easy mode in Demon’s Souls would ruin the game’s intent. As I’ve argued before, the whole purpose of the game is to create an atmosphere of oppression, sadness and hopelessness, and a big part of that is the game’s unforgiving nature (in short, no checkpoints, and death causes you to lose all the souls you’ve earned). NSMB Wii’s Super Guide is innocuous, but compromising Demon’s Souls’ difficulty would compromise the game itself. Hopefully I’m getting ahead of myself. After all, the Old King Doran is a minor character in the game, encountered in an optional mission. If Sony’s hinting at some DLC related to the Old King, we can all rest easy. It's probably an event similar to the one on Halloween weekend, where everyone's world tendencies were all set to pure black, only this time it'll be pure white.

I doubt it's an "easier difficulty setting" — think about it. Remember Halloween? The world turned black, inherently leading to greater difficulty during that time. Not a hard mode, just shifting the world tendency – a mechanic in the game from day one. They're probably going to do the opposite, now — shift the world tendency to light for a few days. This will mean weaker enemies, lower grade loot, and the opportunity to explore the areas of the game limited to the white world tendency.

It's going to be the opposite of the Halloween event. Everything will go full white for 2-3 days.

Thanks for pointing that out, everyone. Makes a lot more sense.

also, "the old one" doesnt refer to Doran, it refers to the beast who creates the mist and all that jazz that you sorta go in to when you go to the endgame world. Failpost.
