CivV6 Civilization V This Fall, Screenshots Now

Strategy junkies rejoice, as 2K Games announced that Civilization V will be released for PC this fall. Sid Meier’s Firaxis Games studio is going all out for Civ V, redesigning the game’s combat system, building community features and adding new visual details. Here’s the money quote from 2K President Christoph Hartmann: “This marks a new era that will forever change the franchise responsible for sleep deprivation and reduced productivity for nearly two decades.” We’ve got a rundown of the key features, plus a handful of screenshots, below.

Here’s an early look at what to expect from Civilization V:

  • A new combat system that divides areas into a honeycomb grid
  • Ranged bombardment, allowing players to attack from behind the front lines
  • An “extensive suite” of community elements, including modding tools an multiplayer
  • An in-game community hub for players to challenge each other and share content without leaving the game
  • A new graphics engine with fully-animated leaders, such as George Washington, and realistic landscapes

Though Meier is the director of creative development at Firaxis Games, his role in devleoping Civ V isn’t clear. He may be focusing more on Civilization Network, an upcoming Facebook version of the franchise on which he’s leading design. But given that it’s been five years since Civilization IV, I doubt you’ll care as long as the end product holds the same crack-like addictive properties. [via Hellforge and Neoseeker]
