“Super Smash Bros.” is one of the few Nintendo-published franchises to never see release on a handheld. Gamers everywhere continue hoping against hope that that will change, but Nintendo has yet to officially announce a new entry for its upcoming Nintendo 3DS is in development.
One impatient fan took matters into his own hands. He created “Super Smash Land,” a Game Boy-inspired PC title. It’s what a “Super Smash Bros.” handheld game might have looked like.
The new version’s demo (the second of a proposed three) released yesterday. Hit the jump for a video of the retro-themed project, plus where to download it.

Philanthropistic website ExtraLives.org is live streaming a marathon playthrough of over a dozen Mario games – including the original classic and some lesser known titles – in an effort to raise money for “Free the Children” — an organization that aids impoverished, exploited children around the world. The session will last through January 2nd, 2011 with the goal at $4,000.
At the time of this publishing, the group has raised $538. Not too shabby, but I know gamers are more generous than that. A mere $5 donation not only results in a nice warm feeling in the pit of your belly that no amount of achievement unlocking could match, but entry into a raffle to win prizes like t-shirts. If you’re feeling generous, donate here. (Via Reddit)

From past experience buying strategy guides for role-playing games (yes, I’m an old man) I know just how intimidating the genre can be without a little help. Some RPGs seem filled with secrets nearly impossible to uncover on your own. Though the latest entry in the Golden Sun series – Dark Dawn – was released at the end of November, I’m guessing many folks found it just last week under their Christmas trees. Yes, December is a slow month for new game releases, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to pass over the chance to amalgamate the best tips, tricks and walkthroughs for Golden Sun: Dark Dawn so you don’t have to scour the web mid-boss battle.

Samus Aran is one of the most beloved video game heroines ever, which naturally means she must be the subject victim of countless weird and sexually confusing fan-art created by an adorning if slightly odd public. And while Nintendo definitely doesn’t condone pictures of its famous bounty hunter as a pony, morbidly obese or having her ass clamped onto by a metroid, that’s just where the minds of some drift. You’re not born a fan-artist with a penchant for naughty; you become one over years through an intense process of too much video games and not enough social interaction. Seriously, I love you guys and girls — but you freak me out a bit.
Want proof? Check out these 20 images of Samus Aran I found and now cannot erase from my mind.

Formally known as “Duck Hunt Gun Soap,” this Nintendo Zapper is compatible with all kinds of dirt and grime, even though the thought of rubbing a gun all over yourself is kind of creepy. The Duck Hunt Gun Soap weighs 12 ounces and is, unfortunately, completely flat on one side. But it is loaded with coconut, palm and safflower oils, plus glycerin and a bunch of other materials I’d rather not get acquainted with on a name-basis. Digitalsoaps is selling this big bar of Zapper over at Etsy for $17, plus $8 shipping to the United States. [Etsy via Technabob]

Super Smash Bros. looks like all fun and games from afar, but Robot Pencil envisions the game as a Fight Club of sorts, where all your favorite Nintendo characters go to feel more like real men (even Samus). The above image is the first in an upcoming series by DeviantArtist Robot Pencil, mashing up Smash Bros. with the grit of David Fincher’s frightening 1999 film.

Netherlands-based hacker Hasse’s brother can only use one of his hands, which makes playing video games nearly impossible. So Hasse applied some Wii principles to a standard Gamecube controller, adding motion control that makes it easy to play games one-handed. An accelerometer controls basic movement — the green LED lights where the gamepad is usually located indicate direction — and the left trigger was swapped to the underside of the right handle, where it can be pressed with an index finger. There’s even a toggle for turning on analog controls.

If you’re an old timer like me, the 80s was a glorious decade full of the joy of discovering video games and fond memories of being able to walk around in a jacket like the one pictured above without anyone on the street giving you a second look. You could probably have gotten away with carrying a framed picture of Mario, too! Now, you can test out how doing that would go today.
GameSniped found eBay auctioneer thethingsifind selling old-school Nintendo paraphernalia, including product guides, hats, and store displays. Most of this seems like stuff you would acquire working retail, which means the general public might be surprised by some of the items listed.

“Mario and the Malicious Mushroom Kingdom” subscribes to the philosophy that everything’s better with zombies (See also: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies). So while the short tale, penned by Destructoid community member goodgamer77, looks like a fun little fairy tale on its face, it quickly reveals a sinister side.
