A Gallery Where Arcade Cabinets Are Part of the Art
Mar 02, 2010 - By Benjamin Opal

Suddenly I wish I was in London to check out the “The Faile Bast Deluxx Fluxx Arcade,” where video games are art regardless of how trivial that debate has become. Kevin Williams of The Stringer Report visited the gallery and snapped some photos. Among the cabinets in the gallery are Operation Wolf and Sega’s Daytona USA racing, but some of the marquis have been renamed to artsy titles such as “Its Just Mirror Love,” “Double Barr Delights,” “Bubble,” and “Danger: Within Me Stiletto: Save You.” Accordingly, all the games inside the cabinets have been changed to Flash titles specifically designed for the gallery.
The games are all quite simple and designed to convey a message, though there is a Zaxxon-like game that uses stereoscopic 3D, Williams reported. Everything’s free to play. Still, there’s a machine that lets you buy specially-minted tokens that unlock special features within the games, though two tokens cost 5 pounds. In short, this is the arcade where acid heads an art snobs can collectively revel, and maybe buy a commemorative T-Shirt. If you’re in London, the exhibit can be found at the Lazarides Rathbone Place Gallery until March 19th. The two additional photos below come from Arrested Motion. [via Arcade Heroes]
