For reasons unexplained, Lara Croft has a good shot at getting  a road named after her in Derby City, U.K. The city is holding a vote to name a new road, and “Lara Croft Way” appears on the short list of eight finalists after 100 residents submitted their ideas. Here’s the best part: Voting can be done online, and is open to non-residents. That bodes well for Lara, because this story is sure to run wild in the blogosphere, and I can tell you as a former newspaper guy that nobody local cares enough about small town business like this to outvote adoring Lara Croft fans. If we gamers want Lara Croft Way to become a reality, it’s ours for the taking.

To vote, head to Derby City Council’s Web site, scroll down and look for the voting section on the right sidebar. At the time of this writing, Lara’s got 76 percent of the votes with 185 ballots cast, putting her way out in front of Steve Bloomer Way (as if that guy ever went spelunking in short shorts and a skimpy tank top). Derby’s picking two names — one for each section of the road — so it seems like Lara’s a lock. The results will be announced by January 31. [Derby Telegraph via F*** Yeah Lara Croft and Joystiq]
